Social Butterfly Necklace

I love butterflies—especially these vintage style filigree butterfly pieces! Since I create the Modern Vintage crystal mix to go with gunmetal, I thought it would be appropriate to bring the 2 together in one dynamic piece. You will also find you can create this necklace in copper or silver and with any Swarovski crystal mix!

Instructions:

NOTE: This project uses a crystal mix. If you like to use your crystals symmetrically, you might want to read the instructions and arrange your bicones before you begin. 1. Cut your long and short chain so you have 2 separate pieces with 3 oval links separated by 2 round links. Cut your curb chain so you have 1 piece measuring 3 inches and 1 piece measuring 5 inches.

2. Cut the “heads” off 6 headpins. (This is a great way to make eye pins.) Make a simple or rosary loop toward the end of each.

3. Open a jump ring. Attach it to a wing of the butterfly. Attach it to a piece of long and short chain. Close the jump ring.

4. Attach a loop from an eye pin to the long and short chain. Add 4 bicones to the pin. Make a simple loop. Attach it to the pointed end of your dainty flower finding.

5. Attach a loop from an eye pin to the flower part of your dainty finding. Add a bicone, round rondelle, and another bicone to the pin. Make a simple loop. Attach this loop to the flower end of another dainty finding.

6. Attach a loop from an eye pin to the pointed end of the dainty finding just added. Add 4 bicones to the pin. Make a simple loop. Attach this loop to the 3 inch piece of chain.

7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 to complete the other side. When you get to step 6, you will attach your last loop to the 5 inch piece of chain (the extra length serves as your built in extender chain).

8. On a headpin, pick up a bicone. Make a simple loop. Attach it to the jump ring at the top of the butterfly’s wing.

9. On a headpin, pick up a bicone. Make a simple loop. Attach it to the wing itself just underneath the jump ring.

10. Repeat step 9 one more time.

11. On a headpin, pick up a bicone. Make a simple loop. Attach it to the loop at the bottom of the butterfly.

12. Repeat steps 8 through 11 on the other side of the butterfly.

13. Open a jump ring. Add your clasp to the jump ring. Attach the jump ring to the end of the 3 inch piece of chain. Close the jump ring.

14. On a headpin, pick up a bicone. Make a simple loop. Attach the loop to the end of the 5 inch piece of chain; this adds interest to your extender and adorns the back of your neck!

Gunmetal Dainty Flower Link, 5 x 12mm (2 pieces)
Swarovski Crystal, 4mm Bicone, Bag of 48, Modern Vintage Mix (29 pieces)
Swarovski Crystal, 6mm Faceted Round Rondelle, Vintage Rose (2 pieces)
Gunmetal Plate Head Pins, 2", 21 Gauge, Bag of 10 (15 pieces)
Gunmetal Long and Short Chain By The Foot (about 2 inches)
Gunmetal Curb Chain By The Foot, 2.8mm (about 8 inches)
Gunmetal Plate Jump Rings, Open, Bag of 10, 5mm, 20 Gauge (3 pieces)
Gunmetal Plate Lobster Clasp, 10mm
