Retro Romance Necklace
I made a necklace similar to this for myself recently and just couldn’t wait to share it with everyone! The red rose is the focal but off-center for a less obvious but more dramatic look. Ivory pearls and gunmetal chain add contrast, mystery, and romance to this unique piece. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Shanna Steele, Auntie's Beads Designer
Instructions:
1. Cut your long and short chain so you have the following segments: 6 pieces that contain 2 oval links separated by 1 round link, 4 pieces that contain 3 oval links separated by 2 round links, and 2 pieces that contain 1 oval link each. Cut your curb chain so you have 2 pieces that measure 4 inches each.
2. Put a pearl on an eye pin. Make a simple or rosary loop. NOTE: Pearls are notorious for having small holes. You may have to play and see which pearls will fit on the eye pins. If you have difficulty, you may want to turn the pearl over and try going through the hole from the opposite side of the bead. Keeping a bead reamer handy is also a good idea.
3. Repeat step 2 thirteen more times so you have a total of 14 pearl links. (From this point on in the instructions, I will refer to them as links.)
4. Open a link. Attach it to a single oval piece of chain from step 1. Close the link. Open the other side of the link. Attach it to a 2 oval piece of chain. Close the link.
5. Open a link. Attach it to the last piece of chain added. Close the link. Open the other side of the link. Attach it to another 2 oval piece of chain. Close the link.
6. Repeat step 5 two more times.
7. Open a link. Attach it to the last piece of chain added. Close the link. Open the other side of the link. Attach it to a single oval piece of chain. You have finished the shorter strand. You should have 5 pearls separated by 4 double oval link pieces of chain.
8. Open a link. Attach it to a 3 oval piece of chain. Close the link. Open the other side of the link. Attach it to a 3 oval piece of chain. Close the link.
9. Open a link. Attach it to the 3 oval piece of chain just added. Close the link. Open the other side of the link. Attach it to a 2 oval piece of chain. Close the link.
10. Open a link. Attach it to the last piece of chain added. Close the link. This is the center of the longer strand.
11. Repeat steps 8 and 9 but in reverse. You want to mirror the work you did on the first side of this strand. When you are finished, you should have used 5 pearls, all 4 triple oval pieces of chain, and 2 double oval pieces of chain.
12. On an eye pin, pick up a 3mm round bead. Run the eye pin through the hole in the pendant. Add another 3mm round bead. Make a simple loop. Make sure your loop is tight so the rose won’t slide around.
13. Open a jump ring. Attach it to one of the eye pin loops. Add the last link on your longer chain segment to the jump ring. Add the last link on your shorter chain segment to the jump ring. Close the jump ring.
14. Open a jump ring. Attach it to the other end of your longer chain segment then to the other end of your shorter chain segment. Close the jump ring.
15. Open link. Attach it to the jump ring just added. Close the link. Open a jump ring. Attach it to the other end of the link. Close the jump ring.
16. Repeat step15 one more time.
17. Open a link. Attach it to the last jump ring added. Close the link. Open the link at the other side of the link. Attach it to the 4 inch piece of curb chain. Close the link.
18. Open a jump ring. Attach it to the end of the 4 inch piece of curb chain. Attach half of the toggle to the jump ring. Close the jump ring.
19. Open a jump ring. Attach it to the eye pin on the other side of the rose pendant. Close the jump ring.
20. Repeat steps 17 and 18 to complete the necklace.
