Kumihimo Episode 8: Flat Braid with Beads Bracelet

I found this pattern thumbing through a Kumihimo Book, it is a flat braid with beads that sit just on the edge of the bracelet. We will be using rattail and S-Lon cord for this bracelet. This time we are going to be using the round disc instead of the square disc, as I mentioned before you can do flat braids with both types. Again this is not a hard project but one that you need to pay attention to as to where and when to drop the bead, because we want the bead to remain outside the braid not within it. I did this in a mono-tone color scheme in regards to the rattail and s-lon, I think for my next one I will play with contrasting colors in threads and beads! You should also try different types of beads, I used the cube seed beads, but don't limit your yourself, try something different for a distinct look!

Tips and Tricks
  • You can use a round disc to make a flat braid.
  • Miyuki 3mm Cube Seed Beads can be used as a border on a flat braid.
  • Learn how to use a bead cap on the end of the braid instead of a terminator.

After watching the video I tried making this and 3 times got it wrong. I finally just turned on the video watched a few seconds, paused and worked. You are right Karla, you really need to pay attention. I used CLon instead of SLon as I didn't have any SLon. Thanks for the video and it's nice to know you can make flat braids on a rounds kumihimo disc.

Q: magranny13404 9 minutes ago I am trying to do this pattern using 2 pieces of superlon cord and 6 pieces of 2 mm rattail cord. I don't know what I am doing wrong because I don't have a single braid coming out. It looks like I have 2 separate braids. This is what I am doing after I load my disc like you did: I took the superlon cord from the slot between 32 and 1 and moved it to the slot between 9 and 10; then I moved the superlon cord from the slot between 31 and 32 to the slot between 22 and 23. Next I moved the rattail from the slot between 15 and 16 to the slot between 6 and 7 and the rattail from the slot between 16 and 17 to the slot between 25 and 26. For the next round: I moved the rattail between slot 7 and 8 to the slot between 15 and 16; moved the rattail from between 24 and 25 to the slot between 16 and 17; moved the rattail from the slot between 8 and 9 to the slot between 32 and 1; moved the rattail from the slot between 23 and 24 to the slot between 31 and 32. I repositioned the rattail from the slot between 6 and 7 to the slot between 7 and 8 and the superlon chord to the slot between 8 and 9. I did the same for the west side. From here I started the rounds over moving the rattail from the slot between 32 and 1 to the slot between 9 and 10 and so on. Is there something that I am missing? I tried to write it down as you were doing the braiding but it was upside down as I was watching the video. Can you please help because I really love this pattern? Thank yo

A: So this is what I did. I printed out your question, watched the video and marked off all the moves. You had them all correct until you started over on the new round. If you do not get the threads crossed then you end up with two braids instead of one. So this is what I believe went wrong.
" From here I started the rounds over moving the rattail from the slot between 32 and 1 to the slot between 9 and 10 and so on." That should be the rattail strand from slot 31/32 to 9/10. That is all I can think would do it. It is such a simple mistake to make, believe me, try talking and filming and trying to keep it straight...LOL! But try not to get frustrated and try it again. You should see pretty quickly if it is not coming together. I hope that helps, if not I will have Dena, the Kumihimo expert take a look at it.
