Jewelry Making Chain

Working with chain is a fun way to incorporate metal into your designs. If you are new to jewelry making, you might not have discovered the many things you can do with jewelry making chain. Our designers have made a list and shared some tips to help you discover just how much fun chain by the foot can be!
  • Make charm, cha cha and drop beaded bracelets. You may love the look of a traditional charm bracelet or you may be looking to incorporate clusters of drop beads into that charm bracelet as Karla did in her Flight of Fancy Bracelet. Either way, using chain by the foot allows you to customize the finish and feel of your piece. For example, you can use gunmetal chain with gunmetal charms and findings so you are not limiting yourself to more traditional metals.
  • Use chain as a focal point. There is nothing our designers love more than mixing materials as Karla demonstrates in her Pearly Swag Necklace. Incorporating beaded glass pearls with a layered chain necklace is a brilliant way to create a versatile yet unique piece. You can also use jewelry making chain to create an interesting bead border as Shanna did in her It's Raining Beads Necklace.
  • Display your favorite pendant. You can buy finished rolo or snake chain to display that pendant or charm that has been looking for a necklace... Or... You can buy FUN chain - like sparkle chain - to showcase your new favorite jewelry component. Buying chain by the foot not only allows you to choose interesting chain for your necklace, it also allows you to customize the length.
  • Create a long necklace. Have you ever wanted to create a necklace that you can wear in a single long layer or wear doubled up? Sometimes stringing a lot of beads to make a long necklace can be tedious and time consuming. You can use chain to achieve this look and do one of two things: wire wrap beads between pieces of chain or simply cut the chain to its desired length and wear it simply. It will take less time and will be a modern and versatile way to wear a long necklace.
  • Make extender chain. When you buy chain by the foot, you may only use 7 inches of it to create a bracelet. What to do with the other 5 inches? You can cut it in half and use it to create 2 pieces of extender chain. Extender chain can be put on a necklace design so the wearer can customize the length of their necklace. Use a lobster or trigger clasp with extender chain to make it adjustable and easy to take on and off. You can even drop a charm or beaded dangle off the end of extender chain to add a bit of detail. Using a small curb, oval or round chain to make extender chain works the best.
  • Create cascading earrings. Karla and Shanna often dig through their stashes of chain remnants to find pieces of chain they can use to create dangling earrings. The beauty of this is that you can use a single link from a larger piece of chain or use 1 to 3 inch segments of smaller chain. Dangle beads from the bottom of the chain as Karla did in her Jumping Through Hoops Earrings or wire wrap them so they hang inside a link for a nested look.
  • Break up the bead work. Do you ever feel like you made a piece that just looks a little too straight strung? Maybe it's a little boring or just a little too, well, beaded. Breaking up your stringing work with a segments of chain as Shanna did in her Pyrite's Treasure Necklace gives the beads a rest and draws more attention the piece. Using beading chain can also help with this, as you can string beads and leave the chain exposed as Karla demonstrated in her Earthly Chic Necklace.

If you are just beginning to work with chain, try a few different sizes and styles to see what works best for you. Find a finish and style you like and you will be surprised just how many uses it has. Explore our design gallery and videos to learn different techniques and ways to incorporate jewelry making chain into your designs. You will be surprised just how much fun it can be!
