About This Project

I am not afraid to admit it: I made a mistake. I was trying to create a wide cuff and I set my snaps wrong. Not wanting to waste leather, I decided to get creative and see what I could do to salvage the piece. I created scraps that connect to a series of hooks for a simple bracelet. I must say that I love this piece more than the one I intended to make!

This project requires knowledge of punching holes in leather and setting rivets. If you are not familiar with these techniques, please watch the following videos: Hole Punch Tools and Rivet and Snap Setters.
  1. Cut 3 pieces of leather measuring just over 3 inches long by 1/2 inch wide.
  2. Use a pair of chain nose pliers to completely close 2 of your Z hook clasps. Lay all of your Z hooks out so they are facing the same direction.
  3. Fold your leather over one end of a Z hook. You will want your loop to be about 1/2 inch. Turn the piece over so the folded over portion is facing you. Use your punch on the 2mm setting to punch a hole through both pieces of leather.
  4. Run the post portion of your rivet through the back of the leather. Apply a cap to the top. Push them together. Use your rivet setter and a hammer to set the rivet.
  5. Take the other end of this piece of leather and fold it over another Z hook. Repeat the process from steps 3 and 4 to apply your rivet.
  6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 to attach the other 2 pieces of leather to Z hooks. When you get to the last piece of leather, attach it to the Z hook that started the piece.

Questions and Answers

Q: Math was not one of my stronger subjects in school. I must be very sleep deprived because as I try to make my order for some leather to fit the 19mm x 23mm Terracast hooks? I am befuzzled on what size leather to use? You mention all the other sizes and things for everything else but for us beginners in these kinds of rivets and things for these bracelets I need to know all the details you care to give out? I have never done any of this before and don't have a clue what I am doing. Thank you. Cynthia

A: Cynthia, no need to be so hard on yourself, I struggle too. If I didn't have a bead gauge and google, I would be in real trouble, LOL! This clasp will accommodate the 1/2" inch TierraCast leather strips we offer: http://www.auntiesbeads.com/TierraCast-Leather_c_3891.html
It will also work with the 10mm flat leather and (2)pc of the 5mm flat leather that we carry:
http://www.auntiesbeads.com/Flat-Leather_c_3705.html. the measurement of the area is about 12mm. I suggest getting a bead gauge, http://www.auntiesbeads.com/Slide-Bead-Gauge_p_13821.html, with this one you can see the measurement in inches and mm.
