Higher Love Ring

I love making wire wrapped rings but it has been a while since I have found a bead that inspires me to try something new with wire. When I saw this turquoise cross bead, I just knew I wanted to find a way to do something unique. It took me a few tries to get it right, but I love the result!

If you are new to making wire wrapped rings, you might want to watch the Wire Wrapped Rings Videobefore trying this project.

Instructions:

1. Cut a piece of wire measuring about 36 inches. String 2 silver beads, the turquoise cross bead, and 2 more silver beads on the wire. Center the beads on the wire.

2. Put the ring on the ring mandrel at a marker about a size and a half higher than the desired finished size. (If, for example, you want your finished piece to be a size 7, you will put the wire at the 8.5 mark at this point.)

3. Push the wires down so they are at a right angle. Make sure the silver beads stay near the cross bead while you push the wires down. Wrap each wire around the mandrel 3 times so your band will consist of a total of 6 pieces of wire. Your silver beads may move around at this point; that is okay as they are not needed yet.

4. After you have wrapped your wires around the mandrel, position both wires so they are on opposite sides of the cross bead but each one is at the bottom of the cross bead. Take the right wire across the bead at a diagonal going from right to left. Take the left wire across the bead at a diagonal going from left to right.

5. Remove the ring from the mandrel. If your silver beads have slipped or moved, make sure they are once again next to the cross bead with 2 on one side and 2 on the other. (The silver beads will help anchor your wire wrapping when you begin to wrap the band.)

6. Position your piece so your thumb is on the X on top of the cross and the cross is facing you. One of your wires should be at the top of the piece. Take that wire underneath the band then up and around the band as close to the second silver bead as possible. Wrap the wire around the band about 5 times. Cut excess wire and use your chain nose pliers or crimper tool to tuck the wire.

7. Repeat step 6 on the other side.

8. Put the ring back on the mandrel. Turn it several times. This will help reshape the band and size the ring.

9. Remove the ring from the mandrel. Turn the ring so the cross is away from you. You will see wires where you crossed the cross to start the band. Use your chain nose pliers to tighten the wires so they are concealed under the cross. This will also help tighten the X on top of the cross. If this affects the wire detail on top of the cross bead, use your chain nose pliers to gently reshape the wire.

Materials and Tools Needed:

Any cross bead measuring 18 - 22mm
Any 20 gauge Artistic Wire(about 36 inches)
3mm round metal beads to match the color of the wire (4 pieces)
Black Plastic Ring Mandrel
Nipper Tool
Chain Nose Pliers
OR
Designer Crimper Tool
