Color Inspiration
Posted by Karla Schafer on 7/28/2011 to Projects
How do you get color inspiration? I don't know about you, but sometimes I just get stuck. What to design, then what colors to use...Grey Area Necklace was actually born out of my color pallet. As I said in the project, I was taken with a photo on Facebook. It actually spawned the design. Now it is not always that easy, but when something catches your eye, grab it! If not now, you may want that color inspiration for some other time or when you are blocked. Keep a folder or inspiration board with all things that interest or inspire you. Sometimes it may just be walking outside to view the sunset.

In fact our Swarovski Crystal, 4mm Bicone, Bag of 45, Tucson Mix, came from such a sunset, when Susie, Alyssa (our former buyer) and I were on our way back to our hotel in Tucson, we gazed upon the fabulous sunset that is only in Arizona. We went as far as discussing what makes the colors, dust particles, etc...but it turned into what Swarovski Crystal colors they are!

You don't have to be a scientist or even an interior designer to find the right color...be inspired by what is around you, what you interact with or see. My sister recently found color inspiration in a magazine; a page full of throw pillows...the simplest things can bring something to your imagination, as we are only limited to!

I agree with you Karla, sometimes I am overwhelmed with all the colors. I need to learn to go with my instincts and just let it happen.

I check out Etsy and search for jewelry or other items by colors and take in all of the color combinations. I get stuck a lot too. But sometimes I'll just get hit with color inspiration from photos, or just walking around outdoors. My biggest fault is not writing the ideas down, or acting on them right away!

I like to watch interior design shows or even visit a favourite paint manufacturers site and use their full room simulators and experiment with paint colours there. Fabric stores/sites are also great for seeing what's "new" in colour combinations for the year. Colour is everywhere so we just have to notice.

Whenever I need color inspiration I hit up Colourlovers.com. I get stuck all the time on my graphics arts work and it's always a lifesaver. I've not used it for jewelry yet, but with all the different varieties, something is bound to work.

I just ask you :-) BTW thanks for responding to my request to match a pendant from your site w/beads. I will try 1 of the colors u suggested.
